Some brave folks in the peace movement have visited Syria, and Phil talks to one of them. Canadian Amir Maasoumi left on a fact-finding mission, and explains how it came about. The crisis has also had destabilizing effects on Lebanon.

The dynamic and talented Prof. Isaac Saney gave a talk at the event "Race and Revolution: Lessons from Cuba," responding to an article published in the New York Times about race in Cuba. ("They seem to do this periodically, and usually not with friendly intent.")

He discussed Esteban Morales' collection of essays entitled "Race in Cuba." (Monthly Review) It used to be that black people were not allowed in downtown Havana, in order not to offend the sensibilities of U.S. Southerners. Now, because of its conscious efforts to rectify historical inequalities, Morales has identified the Cuban state as the greatest active ally of people of African descent.
